Create Your Own Doll Game

Create Your Own Doll Game – Every successful movie, TV show or even trailer is followed by two things – memes and promotional merchandise. While Netflix’s Squid Game has yet to release any official merchandise, designers and builders like Sanago are working on creating their own collectibles. The “octopus toy doll” is not a commercially available product, although Sanago’s video shows you how to make one yourself. All you need is a $50-$70 3D pen, a piece of plastic wire, an iPad, and some studio tools to create a scaled-down replica of a K-drama killer doll. If you want, you can even attach step motors to turn the doll’s head 180° for dramatic effect!

With a YouTube channel dedicated to 3D pens, Sanago has created videos documenting the use of 3D pens. Although the Japanese YouTuber sells 3D pens under his own brand on Naver, the videos are more about showing what the pens can do as he builds miniature models of BMWs, Porsches, houses, cartoon/video game characters and occasionally 3D repair of damaged walls, stairs and pillars yourself with a pin. However, for the Squid Game Doll, Sanago used a great creative trick by simply tracing the image on the iPad to create the perfect collectible toy. This basically ensures that his models are perfect in basic detail and proportion, and a steady hand always helps. Sanago simply drew the front outline of the doll first, as a guide for the rest of the 3D assembly.

The next steps involve converting the 2D silhouette to 3D by adding more cross section, first building the legs, then the clothes/torso and finally the head.

Once a rough skeleton is available, Sanago essentially fills in the blanks and creates a “mockup.” Acting almost like a 3D printer (although it takes less time, uses less filament, and contributes only a fraction of the cost), the Sanago fills the gap pretty quickly, focusing more on getting the job done quickly than to get it right. It’s definitely fun. watching the 3D pen essentially draw air makes Sanago’s deft handiwork bringing rough shapes to life seem even more incredible. The following steps will ensure that the model looks absolutely perfect.

The face is built in the same way as the rest of the doll, with emphasis on details such as eyes, nose, lips and more. Two things are important here – first, make sure the base model looks roughly the way you want it to, and second, make sure there are absolutely no inconsistencies or gaps when filling in the rough 3D structure. Just like the way a 3D printer adds layers to create a solid surface, you have to do the same because even though the layers start out looking completely rough, they eventually reveal a smoother model.

At this point, the model looks like a piece of ramen cake that has not been placed in boiling water. This is certainly intentional, as the design process here is a combination of additive and subtractive modeling. Sanago begins by creating a rough model of the toy, and when he is satisfied with the overall look of the toy, he works on the finer details, creating a smooth product out of thick, hollow plastic blocks.

Speaking of hollow matter, Sanago also reused the toy parrot’s electronic components and put them inside the doll. The control board, microphone and speaker are housed in the hollow torso, two AA batteries are housed in each leg, and stepper motors are housed in the neck to turn the head on command.

Finally, the finishing process begins with a heated sculpting tool that Sanago uses to melt and smooth the texture of the noodles on the doll. It’s a painstaking process that takes time and patience, but it can turn a basic rough 3D model into something more like the final product. It also allowed Sanago to sculpt details such as lines on the lips, eyelids and hair. While Sanago’s MacGyvered heat tool isn’t something every home will have, the easiest way to get the job done is with a knife and a candle, or if you’re comfortable with a heat gun or hair dryer. One of the great things about this creative process is that you can use almost any color yarn you have lying around. As long as the threads are the same material they should hold up well and eventually the whole model will be painted over so any base color will work for your design.

At this point, it’s a bit like using any 3D-printed, CNC-machined, or hand-crafted model. Sanago began by sanding the surface with a Dremel tool and a sanding drill, to make sure there were no bumps or irregularities in the surface. There is no need to model the part with jigs as the 3D pen allows you to glue the components together and the Dremel tool allows you to easily sand or polish the weld/weld marks.

When the whole thing is finished, it gets a coat of paint, in this case with an airbrush (although you can paint your toy by hand). Sanago’s toy also has movable hands, a detail that just takes a little planning (and then sanding and polishing), and a switch on the bottom lets you turn the toy on or off. In a very clever way, Sanago even mounted the doll’s microphone unit behind the petticoat button, with the buttonhole allowing you to easily record what the doll is saying while the speaker on the back plays the doll’s muted dialogue. At the end of the video, Sanago even used the 3D pen to assemble the Pink Guards helmet and made a demo video of the Red Light Green Light game in progress. While it doesn’t match what Netflix puts out in movies, it has over 14 million views on YouTube, which is pretty impressive if you ask me!
