The German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus conducted the first experiments on memory, recall and distance learning in 1895. He developed the forgetting curve, which measures how quickly information is lost over time in the absence of a strategy or effort to retain it.

If students interact with their notes (re-read/discuss/write/participate) within 24 hours, forgetting is reduced. Repeating it a second time in a short period of time during the day makes the memory 100%. A third repetition within a week brings the memory to 100% in a shorter time.

I teach Cornell’s record keeping system, which was developed in the 1950s as part of the University Readiness Program (AVID). Effective recording is interactive and involves reusing the original notes to remember the content rather than recording it as a one-off copy.
