Oh sleep You don’t come easily to me. I’m not one of those people whose head hits the pillow and passes out. I need an hour of rest before bed and even then it takes a while to fall asleep.

My husband is one of the lucky ones in the sleep department. We can talk about money or politics before bed and he will stop talking, roll over and go to sleep. I could talk about cats and I was still crazy before bed.

I’ve always been like this, nothing new. It was very difficult to sleep when I was young. Interesting things could happen, I didn’t want to miss any of them.

One of my earliest memories is of sleeping, or not sleeping at all. I was young and I tried to sleep in my bed but I couldn’t. Suddenly, the enticing smell of hot buttered popcorn wafted from the floor. Naturally, I had to go down to check it out. My parents thought they could enjoy a movie date and popcorn at home after the kids went to bed. In the child’s mind, I was sure he had forgotten to invite me. Even adults make mistakes.

I was brought upstairs without popcorn and tried to settle down. It took me a long time to fall asleep that night.

Many women suffer from insomnia during pregnancy, but I had the best sleep of my life wearing squish. I remember the deep, deep, coming-of-sleep (sorry husband) I had been blessed with for months.

Since I’m back to my normal non-pregnant sleep, sometimes I need help to rest. I often turn to guided meditation to help me sleep. Although I sometimes meditate unguided, I am a big fan of a guide. If you suffer from insomnia, chances are your brain is overactive. Listening to a guided sleep meditation can be a great anchor for your wandering thoughts.
