You are not alone. For many Christians, prayer can sometimes seem dry or hasty. Prayer is a conversation with someone who loves you dearly and knows you intimately, so it can be difficult to accept or deal with when the conversation dries up. Part of the problem can also be the temptation to see prayer as a conversation with God rather than a conversation with him.

But everyone goes through periods when prayer feels like it’s going uphill. So we’ve created this list of things to pray for when you need inspiration. Each item on the list comes with a Bible verse to shape your thoughts and an example of how you can pray in response.

Please treat this list as open and add more suggestions in the comments section at the bottom of this page.

“For in him all things were created: in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, whether powers, whether principalities, whether authorities; everything was created through him and for him. (Colossians 1:16)

How Should We Treat Those Who Are Our Enemies, According To Jesus?

The verse above is a reminder of who you are communicating with when you choose to pray to God. You’re not just talking to some kind of unnameable spiritual force. How do you communicate with something like that?

When you pray, you must be confident that the one to whom you are voicing your deepest hopes, aspirations, regrets, and fears can be trusted. Since God created everything from himself and for himself, he alone has the power to hear and answer all our prayers. Therefore, it is good and important when you begin your prayer by recognizing who you are talking to and what makes them unique.

God, you are amazing. You are the source of all that is good in life and the creator of a beautiful world. I admire you for being the way you are. Thank you for doing everything for you, including me.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Prayer To Become More Like Jesus

John 3:16 is part of a conversation between Jesus and a religious teacher named Nicodemus. It comes at the moment of their conversation when Jesus is trying to help Nicodemus understand what it means to be born again, or to be a Christian, by believing in him. In Jesus’ explanation, one word encompasses the essential character of God, and that word is “love”.

God shows his love for you in all ways. This verse reminds us that it is good to return regularly to thank God for His ultimate act of love when you pray. Without His willingness to let Jesus die on the cross, your relationship with God would not be possible.

Lord, thank you for loving the whole world. Thank you for loving me before I loved myself and for being willing to show your love for me by making the greatest sacrifice – your death on the cross. Thank you for giving me eternal life.

“Abide in me, as I am in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; It must stay in the vine. You cannot give birth unless you remain in me. I am a vine; You are the branches. If you abide in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; You can do nothing without me. … As the Father loved me, so I have loved you. Be in love with me now. If you keep my commandments, you will be in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and I will be in his love.” (John 15:4-5, 9-10).

Leading Your Child To Christ

“For by grace you have been saved through faith – and that is not from you, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast”. (Ephesians 2:8-9).

It’s easy to let your walk with Jesus turn into a moral to-do list and not try to earn or keep God’s love and approval for you. But living this way is boring, impossible, and not the hope that the Bible teaches about a relationship with God through Christ.

You are loved, saved and accepted by God because of your faith in Jesus, a gift that you cannot take credit for. Every day you should remember – and dwell in – God’s great love for you (Ephesians 3:14-21) and remember that his love is a gift that you accept and cannot earn.

If you want to grow and experience the fullness of your relationship with God, you must remind yourself every day what this recognition and acceptance is based on: his love for you. You can’t do anything without him and that love.

Prayer To Conform To The Image Of Jesus

Jesus, help me remember that you love me and that I need you and your love every day. Thank you for being me and how you feel about me is based on who you are and your love for me. Thank you that I may not have your love and acceptance, but I have it because of what Jesus did for me and the faith you gave me in him. Help me to live differently because I love you completely.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is similar to this: Love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-38)

The only reason you can love God, yourself, or those around you is because God first loved you. He made a way for you to connect with Him and experience His love so that He can change you and love others as a result.

In fact, love of neighbor is one of the greatest commandments given by God, along with love of God, as Jesus teaches in Matthew 22. Following the same verse in Luke 10, Jesus further explains this with the parable of the Good Samaritan. In this famous story, Jesus defines who your neighbor is.

How To Pray The Lord’s Prayer (our Father Prayer)

The people you love – those who are like you or are physically close to you – as your neighbors, and God surely wants you to love them and pray for them.

But Jesus goes a step further, presenting a person who crossed the boundaries between unequal people – who were even considered enemies – as an example of how to love. It invites you to love not only the people you choose to be a part of your life, but also everyone you meet.

There is no clearer or easier way to love someone in your life than to approach God on their behalf. Perhaps you can make a list of people in your life that you pray for or would like to pray for. Look at your list. Are the people on it the most similar to you that makes you feel safe in a relationship with them?

Father, please help me to remember the great love I have for you. Show me how I can show and convey my faith in You and Your love to the people I live, work and play with every day. But also help me see the people who are on the fringes of my community and the world and give me the courage to reach out, learn from them and love in tangible ways.

Ways To Pray: Praying The Bible

“Let each of you look not only at your own interests, but also at the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4)
