And every year I see students go through the same painful process of trying to choose between Great Company A, Great Company B, and Great Company C. As they struggle with this decision, I often find many students asking the following question: “Which company is the best/highest company.” A variant of this question is: “Which company will allow me to earn more money or achieve more success at work.” Students are desperate to make the “right” decision and choosing between options allows them to feel that one is right and the other wrong.

A few years ago, I wrote an open letter to students interested in marketing. It was well received and reached many CMO aspiring marketers. I decided to write another open letter specifically about this difficult and somewhat painful decision.

Here is my advice. Take it for what it’s worth. This is one person’s opinion, however informed by having done extensive research on C-level marketers and being a former CMO/GM.

What makes success? In my opinion, it’s about enjoying the work, enjoying the people and enjoying the culture. When these three things happen, you jump out of bed and look forward to the day. You bring a better attitude to work, smile more and want to work harder. And when that happens, you’ll get more work and do it in a way that makes others want to work with you (and promote you). Generally, all students who make it through the top MBA program filter are eligible. What changes? Work ethic. Commitment. Attitude is a way of communicating with others. and gratitude for opportunities, training and guidance and the ability to accept them with grace.

That way, the ‘right’ way is up to you. There is a lot of peer pressure to go in a certain direction or get into the “right” company (some imaginary rankings created by the student body may not match reality). This makes no sense to me. Students are not all the same, and what ticks one person may not be the same for another. The type of work, people and culture that inspires one person can silence another. So the first step is to put on hearing protection and get rid of stress and noise. It encourages you to conform to the crowd and lower your own standards.

Following the crowd is very effective (I call this “sinking” when everyone else is “jigging”). At one point in my career, I interviewed for a position at the CEO’s company. He had a master’s degree but not an MBA. He was very rich. After graduation, he had two big offers. One was at Jewell Grocers for management training and the other from Procter & Gamble – he chose Jewell. Confused, I asked him why he chose Jewel, as many would “rank” P&G as having a better training program than Jewel. His answer: “Because all the smart kids went to P&G and thought I’d stand out at Jewel.” At the time, I thought it was a very interesting answer and definitely a successful choice. He told me that the company excited him and based on his career aspirations, it was a good fit.

And this is the key to choosing the right company. Find out where you excel. Work, people and culture. Fresh out of graduate school, I had to choose between two companies – one that had a great reputation for developing finance-focused executives (I’ll emphasize more) and one that I really liked the people and culture. Working for both companies interested me, but I felt that my work style would fit better in one company – I would be more accepting – and therefore more likely to succeed.
