Sometimes you have to roll up your sleeves and dig. We asked a few writers to try out a few apps to see if taking online surveys to earn money is worth the effort.
Online Survey That Actually Pays
The results were not spectacular: it was a lot of time for very little pay. Now, let’s face it, it was 2017, but the latest App Store user survey shows that nothing has changed. No one is getting rich, but surprisingly few people are complaining.

Making money from surveys may not be important. Over time, people can express themselves with little reward and added benefit.
In our search for the top iOS apps for getting paid to take surveys, we found these apps to be the leaders in the field.
At the time of this writing, all have over 100,000 reviews and are rated 4 stars or higher.
Although many reviews of these apps admit that the payment is not high, many users like to earn pocket money and participate in surveys.

In 2017, the three of us spent over 50 hours on paid surveys and earned less than $90 combined.
So, no, online surveys have not been an effective way for us to make money. (Skip to the list or continue learning our experience.
Honestly, taking paid surveys is easy and can definitely be done from home if you have an internet connection. The sites we review are free and require no knowledge or experience. Depending on the site, taking a survey can be an easy way to make a little money or a desperate job that pays nothing.
Some sites cost more than others. In each survey, we evaluated sites that provided value for money and matched them with sites that did. We hate sites that compensate with a confusing points system and rarely send surveys that qualify.

Remember that your demographic and other characteristics will determine whether you qualify for the survey. Three of us, interviewed in 2017, were single women living in the city, aged around 20. Depending on the survey, we may or may not have ideal participants. Your profile results may differ from our profile results.
Below are our findings after trying to spend an hour a day on each site for five days. Some days, multi-site polls weren’t enough to fill the clock. (We didn’t count this time in our review hours.)
We’ve ranked these US sites from highest to lowest based on the average hourly rate we found in 2017.
This site is a survey aggregator with an efficient verification process. Its dashboard is informative and displays useful features like your activity and customer support form. The site performed above average in the selection of surveys we were able to conduct. In terms of points awarded for each survey, 500 or 1000 points may seem like a lot at first, but when you convert them into real rewards, you will receive 50 cents or dollars. Also, you can’t cash out until you reach 25,000 points, which equals $25. Read more in our OneOpinion review.
Grabpoints Vs Superpay.me Review: Which Is Better?
This site is a small survey aggregator, but it stands out. The site has a clean, easy-to-use dashboard and offers a high score for every survey you complete. The points system is simple and the dashboard shows you how many points are in dollars. But you need to reach 500 points before withdrawing money. For more information, see Survey Junkie.
Some survey sites bombard users with information and opportunities, but not surveys. Its simple, intuitive website allowed us to take surveys without hesitation. For starters, we also appreciated the site’s live points system, which works out to 10 cents per point. Most importantly, we actually made money. In our survey, we averaged $1.50 per hour to earn money on Amazon. Check out our review for more information.
This site offers surveys exclusively through its own market research company, Ipsos. The site offers fewer surveys than aggregators, but you stay with iSay for each survey, making the overall experience easier. Sometimes it will show you surveys you’ve tried, which can be confusing. See the iSay review for more information.
The site offered 75 more survey options than any other site we tested. But it also had the lowest success rate (9.33%) and the lowest average hourly wage. Furthermore, the reasons for survey failure were often unclear. At one point we were kicked out of a contest for trying to spell the word “violet”. (Yes, we spelled that right.) This site offers many survey options, but inefficiencies are common. Sometimes we are tempted to click on a link just to take a survey. Sugbox collects third-party surveys, so some of the sites it sends you to are better than others. Points take longer to earn, but the site’s extensive rewards marketplace has hundreds of options, including gift cards, sweepstakes, and PayPal payments. Check out our full Swagbox.
Unlike many other sites, Toluna allows users to choose survey topics such as electronics or travel, which makes the job more interesting. But this allowance did not compensate for his low salary. We earned just 71 cents an hour on deposit, the lowest of all the sites we tested. Five hours of our points are not enough to buy cheap gift cards. Find out more in our full review.
New users receive a $5 bonus after verifying their email address with InboxDollars. But that doesn’t make up for how little we made per hour when we took the survey, at 41 cents, the lowest of the 12 sites we tested. Sometimes the site asked us for our address, phone number and date of birth instead of sending us a survey. Read our InboxDollars review.
Regardless of the site, the income from surveys is less than other job opportunities. For example, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, and our hourly earnings range from 41 cents to $2.03 an hour. Most survey sites require a minimum score to open in order to receive rewards. On most sites, we haven’t reached the minimum amount after five hours of work. (You might want to check out other hobbies that make money.)

In addition to our time, we also provided valuable personal information to these survey sites. We often reveal our birthdays, zip codes, income, health, ethnicity, living conditions and more. As we spent hours in question and answer mode, we rarely thought about providing this information.
“The biggest threat is not knowing how the information is being used,” says Eva Velasquez, president and CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center. “You’re really at the mercy of these sites saying, ‘Okay, I trust you’re good with the information I’m providing.’
According to Velasquez, our data could, for example, be used for dubious research or sold to health insurance vendors. Or it could be stolen, which poses a risk to websites that store personal information. Much of the information we share seems innocuous, like our shopping habits and travel plans. But information like your birthday and other stolen information can be used to steal your identity. So keep that in mind when answering the questions.
Even with the disadvantages of online surveys, some people still consider conducting an attractive selection survey. However, there are no barriers to entry and can be done from anywhere with an internet connection.
Hour Surveys That Pay You A Lot Of Money
Don’t forget. If you are asked for your social security number, bank account number, or driver’s license number, skip the survey. Velazquez advises to “knowingly” share more personal information with survey sites. Answering questions on a TV commercial may be fine, but providing medical information is not worth the risk.
Create an email address for survey sites only. Many survey sites send us several emails a day. By signing up for these sites with a separate email address, survey offers won’t clutter your primary inbox.
