The Legend Of Tarzan (dvd)

Cast: Andie MacDowell, Cheryl Campbell, Christopher Lambert, Ian Charleson, Ian Holm, James Fox, Nicholas Farrell, Nigel Davenport, Paul Geoffrey, Ralph Richardson

Synopsis: A missing heir to a respectable Scottish family, raised in the African jungle by cattle, finally returns to his estate only to discover that the difference between the two worlds is truly significant.

Greystoke is funny, intelligent, even poignant in its comprehensive treatment of a story that has always provided a great place for children and adults alike. The biggest problem with this film is that it is too short. [26 March 1984, p.74]

Greystoke is one of the most enjoyable films of its kind that I have ever seen. read full review

The cleverest and perhaps the best film adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic novels about Tarzan, the big-blooded white boy raised by apes in the jungle since Elmo Lincoln first brought the character to life in 1918. Read the full review.

Greystoke has its many pleasures, and despite this in the hands of the best observers, it has an enormous epic. [March 30, 1984, p.D1]

For all geniuses, form triumphs over content. Director Hugh (Chariots of Fire) Hudson nails it and the climactic scene leaves its mark. Greystoke is curious entertainment, less satisfying than Planet of the Apes, which raises the same question: noble savage or naked ape? [March 30, 1984, page 21]

In the second half of the film, Hudson links the story to express his “statement” that apes are more civilized than humans; The film simply loses its mind and reaches a pathetically inconclusive ending.

Greystoke: The Legend Of Tarzan, Lord Of The Apes (movie, 1984)

Beautiful photography, the first role for Christopher Lambert, who then broke out in Highlander. Nice costume, good idea of Tarzan struggling to fit into it. Ian Holm is the best actor in the movie. This movie died for me halfway through when it fell in love and was called a lion.
